In most cases the exact cause of Glaucoma and raised pressure/reduced perfusion to the optic nerve is not identified and fully understood.
There are certain types of glaucoma (so called 'secondary glaucoma');however, where there are known causes as follows:
1. From eye trauma, including history of bleeding in the eye.
2. From head trauma
3. From iritis and other inflammation in the eye
4. Previous eye surgeries
5. Long term use of steroid based medications (drops, tablets, cream, inhalers or sprays)
6. Pigment dispersion syndrome (slow loss of iris pigments)
7. Pseudoexfoliation (deposit of powder like deposits on lens and drainage channels of the eye)
8. Part of a syndrome and associated with other health issues
9. Could be inherited and present from birth (Congenital)
10.Narrowing or stenosis of carotid blood vessels ( blood vessels in the neck) might increase the risk of Glaucoma by reducing blood flow to the optic nerve.
Everyone is different and so are their risk profile. Mr Raj can help assess your individual risk factors and help manage your glaucoma in Birmingham, Dudley, Black country and West Midlands.
