About 50% of people with Glaucoma may not be diagnosed in time. In other words, 50% of Glaucoma patients may not know that they have Glaucoma.
Vast majority of patients have 'Open Angle Glaucoma' where the patients are generally without any symptoms till the late stage of Glaucoma when much of the visual field and vision has been irreversibly/irrecoverably lost. This type of glaucoma can indeed be called the ' Silent Blinder'. Increased awareness and appropriate check up by a glaucoma expert may go a long way in preserving your sight.
On the other hand, some patients who suffers from narrow angle glaucoma and acute angle closure glaucoma may get symptoms with eye pain, red eye, watery eye, blurred vision, headache or browache. They may also complain of seeing 'Colour halos' around lights at evenings and low lighting conditions. Acute angle closure glaucoma is an eye emergency as the pressure in the eye can go up 2-3 times of the normal range or even more and if not managed urgently can lead to irreversible loss of vision and visual field. Please contact your local eye casualty urgently for this acute eye emergency.
